Welcome to our adventures in ponding.

We started digging our pond in April of 2001. At the same time we redid out backyard too. It seems that I am continually making changes to the pond. I would really like to make it bigger or even put in another pond, but I don't think that my dear husband will be very supportive of this venture.

Jordan and our great green pond. This is a picture of our pond the first spring and we are having and algae bloom due to lack of plant cover and an overabundance of nutrients. Plant cover should be right around 60% of the pond surface.
To help combat the algae we put in a filter made out of a 55 gallon food grade barrel filled with red rock. If you use red rock be sure to rinse this off really well, if not you will have red water for a while.
We used this filter for two years and it was not quite large enough to handle the fish load and we never did achieve a clear pond like I want. So this year we took the lava rock filter out and put in a 150 gallon rubber maid skippy filter filled with floor scrubber pads. So far this is working out great. We have pretty clear water. Not gin clear yet, but I am hoping that this filter will be able to handle the waste load.
New Filter Picture Here Here is a close up of the new skippy filter. If you would like to build one here is a link to Skippy's Filter. Here you can get a list of what you will need to build your own filter. Along with being able to purchase bacteria and enzymes if you like to use that kind of thing.
First Revision Of The Pond!
It seems that a pond is never finished. Especially ours. I thought that our top pond was too small, so what do I do, but make it bigger. Because everyone knows that bigger is better. Well my husband thought that the litter top pond was fine! There is still more rock to be added, but everyone needs at least ten projects! :0)

We also redid the waterfall, adding a large rock. We like the sound that this makes rather than the trickling stream we had in place before.

Under Construction!
